Many would argue that when the second amendment was put into the constitution that there was little in the way of a standing military in the newly formed United States. Because of this the country had to be defended by a militia made up of the citizens. As we had just overthrown a monarch that was ruling us it was seen as a way of allowing the people to rise up and defend the freedoms and values of the United States should such a monarchy end up in place here.
